Spotted this Evo 6 for sale on Piston Heads just now: http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/1355261.htm

It's advertised as being a 1999 model, on a private "52" reg plate
How the hell is this possible... I don't get it?
Would the car not have to be registered after 2002 for this to work? In that case, is it possible it was sat unregistered at a dealership for some years? Or would it be to do with importing the car? I thought imports took on the reg of the year of manufacture?

It could have been an unregistered model; the year of the plate is actually in line with the date of first registration - not the date of manufacture.

I don't know how it's worked in this case however.

I'm sure there was a story about an unregistered sapphire cosworth on a Y plate as it was registered in 2001 even though as a car it was 10/12 years old. However, something strikes me as odd about the advert as it doesn't really look like a private plate

It will be like already said, when the car was first registered in this country. My mates FTO is like this, came to this county in 98 so is on a S plate but it's a few years older than that.

Can you not buy 'newer' plates for older cars but not older plates for ewer cars.

ie. 52 number plate on a '99 car. (Above)

A reg number plate for a W reg car.

Of course, you should never be able to use a registration mark to make a car look newer than it is...if the parts that make up a car create ambiguity in the year of manufacture then it goes on a Q.

May have been a 1999 model that wasn't registered till 2002 for various reasons. Or it's been restored and re-registered. You see the odd 59 plate classic mini around becuase they've been rebuilt with all new parts.

Surely that would put it on a Q plate if its previously had a registration??

Square rear number plate, external rear fog, rear wiper.....all are significant to Jap market cars, UK ones have square rear plate & internal rear fog. Possibly no wiper also - certainly is the case with impreza's not sure about evo's.

I think with regards to an import if theres not significant documentation to support a model year then it gets issued with one from the year that the import takes place.

Hence 1999 model (year the 6 was 1st built) on an 02 plate (year it was imported) maybe

The Uk Evo 6 had the fog light built into the rear bumper(import usually have them hanging on the bottom of the bumper). The boot was the same,so either type of plate can be fitted.
