I applied before, seen it as a good way to get a full time job as a firefighter as its pretty difficult to get in. Got turned down as i wasnt close enough to the station. Going to try again once i have moved into a new flat a bit closer to town.

Its for rural areas, where theres no enough demand for a full time crew. Each member gets a pager, if theres an incident, it goes off and you have 5 minutes to get to the station.

Good excuse for speeding

even though i work in a service, as professional staff

im still yet to find out how exactley people in there other jobs manage to do it, one of the guys at a station is a sales manager at a vauxhall garage, having worked in the motortrade i just cant see how you would be able to drop everything to run/drive to the station

Would you have 'shifts' when you are supposed to be available? Cos you could be anywhere and your pager goes off!!

Yeah, theres training on tuedays nights. Need to commit 120 hours, days can vary, but its 5 days of being "on call".

As jr said, theres a retaining payment, then money for when theres a callout.

what sort of training do you need to and fitness levels do you need to be a firefighter? I've considered it myself a few times, but I'd certainly have to get back to the gym.

The letter I got from them doesn't specify what's in the fitness test, but ive been told by people already in the job that its a step test, carrying hoses for certain distances, and so on. Luckily ive been going to the gym for the past few months any, dropped from near 18st to just under 13st, so my fitness levels should see me through

CUtting out the shite has a major effect eh? i dropped 5 stone in 12 months by mainly cutting crap out and tearing into the gym. So good on you

Too right it does. I dont even miss it now, think ive got used to not having much. Though the deadly jaffa cakes, and the occasional bag of harribo, are my vices

i worked over at harveys brewery for a couple of months, the main reason i was there was because they had a kiddie that was also in the Fire Brigade and had been having loads of call outs.

was pretty cool when his pager went off and hearing a shout.. IM OFF!!

Ste - I have been going to the gym now for a good 5 months, and not really seen any weight loss. i have tanked legs and have been working on my upper body, alongside cardio.

a couple of weeks back a few of us weighed in + one fella that was fat weighed 12.5 stone another that had a tanked upperbody weighed 14 and i weigh in at 15.
They started saying "get off the Snickers"

its just the fact that i have toned up retty well and muscle weighs more

You'll be reet

Ive just completed another fire fighting course to allow me to be a fire team member offshore.

The fire service train in the same place we do & having talked to them its not a job i'd want to do.

Very hard to get into as well!!
