Bit of a rant really. Everyone is saying that this recession has seen the building trades die a death due to no work.
Well Ive got fuck loads of jobs to do in our shops, nothing massive, but a good 3-4 weeks work in total. Add to that some work around the house which is probably another week or so. Had 7 or 8 guys speak to us in the last 4 months, only about half of these bothered to quote, then the rest after quoting didnt bother getting back to us. I made it clear to them that I knew the jobs werent massive and was happy for them to be done in between bigger jobs. I also made it clear that we'd be moving one of our shops in to much much bigger premises within the year and would be happy to carry the job on if the work was good.
Just GTF imo. I hope to God more Polish come over and take your fucking jobs you annoying twats.

I thought they would be too, and I could may be understand if it was a day job or something, but its a good 4 weeks or so of work in total (over different sites) and none of them have really been fussed at all.

I can't understand it tbh, I know for a fact there's tons of folk out of work but I also know it's still impossible to get someone to fix your boiler when it's fucked. How does that work?

What I've found is that all the little one-man band firms are still very busy.
Its the major employers (Barrats, Persimmon etc) that have dropped thousands of contracts leaving all those workers with nothing to do.
They haven't got the skill or ability to set up on their own, but make up a massive proportion of those out of work.
The smaller firms are just carrying on as usual.

Ive got about 4-5 mates that are all plumbers & tbh I wouldnt have any of them working in my house, they are all lazy, I just know i'd be let down & I get the impression wouldnt be a mate any more if I had them do a job for me. Got a guy ive been using for years that does all the bits I need doing at good rates!! He's top notch. Used to work at the same company I done the contract tendering at & he left to set up on his own around the same time that I left to work offshore. Since then ive had him do 2 bathrooms & a boiler & hes coming round to do a few bits on the new house as & when I require him.

We are still busy, finishing a house just now then got another to go to, a coffe shop extension, and had alot of interest in our development in last month or so.
Quality builders are still busy IMO
We employ 6 workers and 3 of us in the office

Sound like you've just described what us tradesman call SHIT BITS, loads of little jobs that have been left and will be grief, only a few people would want to do them as they generally don't earn you much for the hassle that come's with it,

They arent anything that would be hassle to do. Just shitty jobs - but for what could be a set daily rate between bigger jobs I thought most 'hard up' builders would be happy with the work.

If doing the "Shit bits" to a good standard would get you more/bigger jobs then surely it would make sense to do them Especially in this climate!

depends on how desperate you are for work, most good tradesman have enough contacts to stay busy and don't do shit bits unless they have nothing else to do

That and they are too fucking lazy to piss about with smaller jobs at multiple locations.
Shame, as the last shop we did up was a massive contract and this next job isnt going to be much smaller
