how do i know if the the engine out of a gsi is c16xe or x16xe its a m reg if that helps

All the usual stuff like the engine, loom, ECU, transponder from around the barrel, the plug for that, and the key chip from inside the key (Small black bit on the left hand side of the key).

chip is in the key, transponder is round the barrel. can just swap everything

Also if its got an Air flow meter its a c16xe.

It will be attatched to the airbox. If its got a metal inlet the chances are its x16xe like said but people do change them. I did because its just alot easier to work with and means an aftermarket inlet can be fitted easier.
