SWIM wants to remove fuse 18 to stop their mileage going up, and was wondering what other effects this might have on the car. I know it'll stop the cigarette lighter from working, and the heated rear screen, but is there anything else?

Nah its electric, and taking out the fuse does stop the speedo, he just wants to know what else will happen. The car seems jerky when changing gears etc, just wondering if it'll cause any damage etc?

looking at my diesel manual for b, the instruments are on fuse 17, along with electric mirrors, electric windows, interior lights, triple info display, power steering and engine cooling, I don't have access to a petrol manual atm so dunno

Steveocee they must be on the same circuit because they both stop working when its removed, and both start working again when its put back in!

The speedo will stop working, the rev counter will not though. I found this out when I was driving along and a 5p jumped into my lighter socket Right before a speed camera as well

Cheers AlunJ but electric mirrors, electric windows, interior lights, triple info display, power steering and engine cooling are all working fine without fuse 18. Its the jerking between changing gears which is bothering SWIM. Also, the car sometimes cuts out, especially when braking sharply with the clutch down. Is there anything to worry about, or will the engine be fine?

bit of a google throws up the following on fuse 18
Fuse 18 - 20 Amp - Central Locking System, Reversing Lights, Cigarette Lighter & Automatic Transmission and speed sensor, might be better to check a haynes manual for the relevant model though? Not quite following how it's fuse 18 that stops the odo when the instruments are on 17?

You reckon? They've tried putting the fuse back in, and it does cure the problem, so they must be related?

Loads of related threads to this. Seems if Fuse 18/Speedo isn't working then your car won't run properly.
