Not really. You can see his point. If a guy can't take photos of an event, in public, in a town centre without been pressured for his details then what kind of freedom do we have?

Would they have done the same for someone with a camera phone? Where is the line drawn before no one can take photos because you might be a terrorist

Tbh if 2 random men were taking pictures of me i would want them to f*ck off.

And it isnt the police/goverment that have made it like that, its the wierdos that wonder the street i.e perverts/pedos/murderers/rapists/general nutjobs.

Do the police actually believe they are doing the right thing there or are they cringing as much as everybody else at the stupidity of what they are doing?

Second!

It does seem to be a bit OTT considering it's a Xmas event, but then again i'd rather the police do this than not and let slip some dodgy bloke doing surveillance of the area. And they weren't stopping him taking photo's, just asking for a few details so they can do checks.
If you've got nothing to hide then what's the problem giving a few simple details to the police?

Its the principle of the thing. If you know you are doing something totally innocent, why should you have to?

As a photographer myself, i know that some of the best shots are candid shots and you have to be quite tactical to get them, you cant just point a camera in someones face otherwise the photo wont be natural.

So where do you draw the line. If someone gets out a camera phone and tries to get some pics, what? Get their details too. Fuck the police are going to be so busy getting everyones details they might just miss out on some real crime.

FWIW i dont blame the police here, they are just doing their job. Its the people that make these ridiculous "laws" that are the problem.

It's got nothing to do with muslims or any other race, or even freedom, it's there to protect the public from kiddie fiddlers taking pictures of kids and catching potential threats.
Police/Government taking this piss is them wanting to store DNA/retina scans/fingerprints on a database and bullshitting some ID card up, this is not however.

And as a photographer, aren't you suppose to ask parents for consent if you're taking photos at a public event that includes anyone under the age of 16?

I wouldnt know, i dont do photos of them types of events

Maybe if it was a closed event, but this was in a town centre, that anyone could just walk up to and watch, and presumably take photos. Theres going to be loads of kids about, how would you get permission?

thought this would be a hot topic

As a few others said i think the same that, fair enough stopping them once asking what they are doing, then just letting them carry on being possible terroists getting pictures of the next target.

But to get stopped again and again, when they have already told the police they are ameatuer photographers seems like the police just wanted to get there numbers up.

i know from filming public events and closed events (gigs) you have to have signs up saying that if you (the public) come within x place/distance then you agree to be filmed. I've always assumed this was the same for photography.

The terrorist act has absolutely nothing to do with stopping people taking pictures, it's been badly abused the same as any other powers you give to the police.
