I've got a VW Polo 1.4, and I am wanting to know is it possible to add a turbo to it? I'll be expecting the reply that it's not worth it, and that's probably correct but I just want the bit of 'oomph' and tisshhh.

Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

Its possible to turbo pretty much anything. Whether it makes sense performance and financially is up to you. Other options are like said a 1.8 20v t or buy one of those things off ebay that makes the sound

Of course you can, but it's going to be a pretty complex job. The biggest issue is likely to be the compression ratio on the engine (the amount the air and fuel mixture gets squashed before it gets ignited by the spark plug). On a modern normally aspirated engine you will find it has a high compression ratio, where as a similar turbocharged engine will have a lower one. You would normally lower the compression ration using new pistons, otherwise you're quite likely to run into engine melting/engine popping situations further down the line.

The second problem is more of an expense than an engineering situation. You'll need new engine management. There are solutions out there where you can run a turbo on standard management, and I'm sure a few people have been successful, but it's just not the correct way to run the engine if you want reliability. You'll need an ECU, loom, sensors and mapping.

I'd imagine you'd need to get a custom exhaust manifold made up too, unless there is something off of the shelf available. The rest of the issues are just fluid transfer
