I've got the chance to buy a really cheap mountain bike frame which is worth a fair bit to buy

Only problem being It once experience a small crack so he had a plate welded on it

Id like to keep it and make a little project bike

but is it likely to brake on me?

Im just not too clued up with welds etc?

An aluminium bike frame will be heat treated, therefore a repair is a no no.

Well, you'll have to find out what it's made of. Aluminium is a single term for such a wide range materials! If it's heat treated then it's quite unlikely the repair will be very successful.

seen fair few similar repairs that have worked just fine,
And being a engineer/welder, that also does tig welding I'd be confident it'd be fine,
Looks like a xc frame? So won't be under huge stresses like a dh frame etc. Like I said I'd just keep an eye on it.

I'd imagine that's cracked because of fatigue. It says on my data sheet that 6013 aluminium should be heat treated after welding. Buy the frame at your own risk TBH.

What kind of XC bike has a chain guide like that too?

Zilent:
*If it was an aluminium frame, I wouldn't trust anything but a tig
Kryptix:
*but if it was tig'd, it'd be ok?
Zilent:
*That depends on how well the weld was shielded by the sheilding gas, the penetration of the weld, the type of weld (butt weld, plate, etc)
*Also depends on how much the rider beats the hell out of it
*If it was tigged correctly, it'll be stronger than original

Mate of mine who's a welder.

If you weld it, it will more than likely crack around the welds eventually and you'll be chasing the cracks away

A shit hot areospace welder with access to an ultrasonic crack detector could sort it for you but you got to find one lol

I had a fox shock that had cracked sorted out by my old dears neighbour who is just one of said shit hot welders.. It was fine for years
