Reading about this elsewhere it seems people seem to have a problem with supermarket fuel saying its less quality then garages like BP and Shell, I personally think its all a bit of a myth, iv seen Tescos garages getting filled up with the same tankers as BP garages and a lot of Tescos garages are Esso anyway.

Surely its all refined in the same places anyway?

Seen some lunatic saying that they used to fill up with supermarket fuel and now only fill up with Shell Ultimate to "blow all the supermarket crap out of his cat"

It's not like Morrisons have their own refinery is it. They will buy it from the same wholesalers who get it from the same refinery as everyone else.

I find Tesco 99 to be better in my M3 than ultimate or optimax.

its actually additives related rather than fuel grade; yes its all refined and even delivered from the same depots but the additives (for Biogrowth etc) are added in the tanker not in the refinery.

This was documented in a case between a paint manufacturer and a tanekr operator. The tankers which were used for supermarkets suffered no paint degradation around the filler point whereas those which were used for main garage runs had paint failures around the top inspection hatches - it was during this case that it was picked up that teh additives were added to the tanker by hand before delivery; they would often splash over the inspection hatch causing the paint to lift. This never happened on supermarket tankers as the additives were not used in the fuel.

This was certainly the case 10-12 years ago and may have changed now - however, i know this first hand and not from the internet

I think that some supermarkets buy fuel from abroad. This could make it lower quality for a number of reasons, while the likes of BP, shell, total, esso etc take it from a terminal at the side of a refinery, fresh from the cracker or whatever process manufactured it.

Ignoring premium brands like optimax etc this is the sole reason that its maybe not quite as good quality.

Its not going to make your car explode though

I will genuinely say that a tank of Tesco diesel doesn't go as far as it a tank of Shell diesel does. I never believed the hype but it does seems to make a difference. I tend to stick to shell for a numebr of reasons, loyality points being one
