Well after selling my irmy corsa B about 3 years back now, me and the girlfriend have been sharing her corsa c 1.2 since.
Now we are looking to get a new car as shes now been driving for 2 years and just hit 25 so insurnace costs are gonna be a bit cheaper for her aswell. Plus we want something just a bit more enjoyable to drive.
Probably a bit random in our choices but after looking round we quite like these
Astra 1.9 SRI CDTI
Fabia 1.9 TDI VRS
Fabia Sport 1.9 TDI
Fiesta 1.6 zetec s
Fiesta 1.7 TDI zetec s
Focus , not sure what model
Mini , Possibly, shes not keen
Though they are mostly Diesel, it doesnt have to be we just figure that after the actual purchase of the car the costs will hopefully be less then a petrol, like tax, insurance and fuel economy, HOPEFULLY??
Basically what i wanna know is the pros and cons of each car and what one would be the best bet, i have only driven the Fabia VRS and quite enjoyed that.
We cover around 9k a year max but i would say its mostly small town driving.
I dont really know anything about them tbh, i know the astras a well known for the egr valve and swirl flap thing going which can be expensive to fix.
cheers

Astra or mini but more astra than mini, dad has the astra and holds the road well (not that he drives it hard) pulls like a train and more powerful than the vrs isnt it?
mini is a nice car but i couldnt own one, test drove a cooper s and it was nice not outstandingly quick although didnt have much chance to stretch its legs, but the interior/windscreen is just bizzare.

If you are only doing 9k miles I wouldnt bother with a diesel.
Although the Astra SRi 150 is a nice car Mini will be most fun out of them and be worth more when it comes to selling it in the future.

Budget , depends really, probably 7k but cheaper the better.
I know i dont really need a diesel only doing 9k max a year, but i was thinking after the actual purchase of the car a diesel will be cheaper to run won't it????, insurance, tax and fuel, even doing town runs i would of thought.

the focus is nicely styled but it's a bit boring to drive.
the mini will be nice around town.
the fabias are just plain ugly.
the fiesta zetec s 1.6 petrol is great fun to drive, but the diesel 90ps model is better.

TBH one of the main things i look for as does probably anyone is reliability, so is there anything i should know about any of the cars.
I know the astra has the swirl flap/egr valve problem.
I also know some fabias had problems with water coming in through the doors.
Anything else reliability wise
Also running costs, as said we currently have a 1.2 sxi corsa c btu in all honesty it not as cheap to run as you may think.

yep sorry 1.6, couldnt be bothered to change it, i know alot of people say diesels are not worth getting unless you do alot of miles, but surely even if you are only doing town driving they must be atleast as good as their petrol equivalent if not better still.
Do you have to service them more though

i've not driven any of them but reckon the focus is best to drive, based on internet/tv rumour

I've just bought a Fabia VRS mate. The ride is a bit loose, but apparently from reading up on forums etc, an ARB and suspension set upgreatly improves it and possibly a front strutbrace. It's quick as standard but they can easily achieve 180 bhp on standard equipment with a simple remap.

do people think a pertrol would be a better choice, as said i only do 9k a year max and alot is small town driving with quick 10 minute drives.
I know the diesel is more to pay out for in the first place but we are not bothered about that, its costs after the car is purchased that bothers me.
