Quick question...
My car is making a whining noise, possibly the gearbox.
If theoretically i, on a suitable closed road, turned the engine off at speed and the noise was still there, would this rule out the gearbox or not as the driveshafts would still be turning?

If in gear yes the shafts would still be turning

Even if it was out of gear the driveshafts would still be turning?

What about if i roll in Neutral? Surely the shafts will still be turning annd they are connected to the gearbox?
The noise doesnt change when im driving along and then go to neutral with the engine on.

Does the whine increase in speed as the engine revs faster or the car speeds up?

As the car speeds up, no change with revs.

More likely to be the diff or driveshafts

without trying to sound like a clever twat about it. Your best bet is to take it to a garage. People on the internet without actually hearing and experiencing the problem are just taking wild un educated guesses.

59k. Boxed 150.
Garage it is. But its really quiet and not sure if its always been there and ive just not noticed it, its almost an electrical whine. Not wheel bearing as ive heard that sound.

if you turn the engine off and left it in gear wouldnt it fuck the car up as it would just try and stop the wheels? so you would need to keep it in neutral to keep it rolling.

I would have only tried it in neutral anyway just in case
Pointless if it doesnt rule out diff bearings, gearbox etc anyway though.

I took it too a garage a couple of months back, 'nah thats normal diesel noise' he said, few days later it got worse, changed the cambelt/waterpump and it went away

Think he was on about the turbo that sounds like a police siren
Does it make this sound when revving the engine whilst at a stand still?

That was a seperate noise that was an intermittent rattle on tickover and more of a high pitched fast tapping when under load, my guess was that it was a pulley of some sort as now they have been changed its stopped, hard to identify with all the taps on a diesel.
This whine is a constant noise above 30mph not when reved stationary, similar to when you've not wired a sound system up very well and it makes that interferance whiring noise (only its not affected by revs, just speed).
Its very quiet at the moment, about as quiet as when you put your blowers on setting one and you get that whine that you dont really hear until you turn it off, i thought my air con was left on at first but its not that.

My Astra Van was making a whining noise that got louder with speed and not revs. Then i started losing gears, lost 4th and then 3rd. It's on 25k miles. Its been at Vauxhall for over a month now, think its having a new gearbox. It's only a 1.3CDTi but sounds similar to your problem.

I dont know why they bother putting the 1.3 cdti lumps into the astra H, especially the van. they just cant cope with a heavy work load. I saw loads with under 1000 miles come back with burnt out clutches because of "overloading the vehicle" according to vauxhall

We've had a few that have needed new gearbox's now. But we don't really load ours up tho coz there's no room in them. Ours all have rear seats so loading space is tiny.
