I have a thread in geek day but not getting anywhere so just wondering if i might get any help in here
...
Got home today the mrs cant get on the internet, a virus that wasnt picked up by norton we use appears to claim to be "windows firewall" telling you have a virus and to purchase its product to remove, anyone had this any ideas gettin rid of it? just put it in google seems quite common lately

You may need to get on another PC with net access and try downloading Malwarebytes. http://www.malwarebytes.org/

Install if you can and have a full scan.

If you get it sorted junk Norton and get Avast, Kapsersky or AVG.

Can you get avast free like AVG?
As i've got McAfee the now free for a few months and fuck paying over £100 a year to keep it.

As good as Avast is, it was useless the other day on the Malware my Dad had which was very similar to the description above. Malwarebytes however fixed the lot, very impressed.

AVG kills my machine everytine it switches itself on! I cancelled two updates (so says my version is far to out of date), and the new version wont run on my version of windows (ME )

i had issues with this one running 2 weeks ago, malware bytes and AVG wouldn't touch it. ended up formatting because i couldn't be bothered fighting it any longer

it won't be as bad on the PC tbh, you can get the operating system disc and format it without too many issues, you'll probably need to hunt round for drivers though. if you haven't done it before it might be abit of a pain.

the recovery discs tend to just incorporate the operating system with all the required drivers to streamline things, its not impossible without them just alittle more fiddly i assume its a branded PC like acer or HP or something if it came with recovery discs? this'll make it easier as most manufacturers will make the drivers available in one place than on their websites

in fact, have you got a model number or something? they may even let you download the recovery software

rofl, norton doesn't detect that the OS is even booted up. Get 'hijack this!' and remove it. then download a decent av like kaspersky or nod32 or something else
