needing a cheap car to tax, run and insure for about 1k max, most be good on fuel ideally 40+ mpg, cars have thought of are 306 d turbo, corsa 1.0, astra 1.7 dti?? any others? cheers

Corsa 1.5D, I paid £300 for a decent one. 56mpg. Personally I'd try and get a 1.7td engined Astra or Cavalier.
Very easily tunable, decent mpg, cheap. With a touch of tweaking you can get close to 100bhp.
But then again my 1.2 8v petrol Corsa B was pretty good on fuel.

Non Turbo is group 4, and group 5 with a Turbo. You can also get a 1.7D.

Cavalier diesel with the isuzu engine. Had 2 of them and they are amazing work horses.
