well I was looking at my manual and the live on the head unit has to go to the positive on the car battery, but the lead on the loom bit aint long enough and plus it has the wrong end, it has no ring on it to go on the battery!

did u not get a bunch of wires with the head unit?
u dont need to run a permanent live, you use the one thats already there, and use the connector lomb u get with the head unit.

No on powerful Alpine units they recomend you replace the factory posive/earth for thicker wiring because it has quite a current draw for a h.unit. Dont bother going to get an alpine extension if they even do one, just get the thicker wiring youreself or get a local ICE shop to put it in, its a v.easy job.
