Them things on tripods when council type people are doing site surveys, they look kind of lasery etc, sometimes has a bloke peering through it

They're called theodolites. They're used for triangulating distance.

How spoddy is that?

Nath calibrates the fancy stuff.

If its a theodolite its very simple to work. You just look through towards a measuring staff and read off the measurements.

The GPS stuff is much better now though. Just wander around, press and button and position and height are instantly calculated. Fooking expensive though

Usually yeah. Carrying the stick is just a case of walking where you're told. The readings taken are the important bit so usually the more senior person.
