Just coming back from a gig at oxford. My mates spread across 3 cars in convoy a something 'Kia' (POS), my Corsa 1.2 SXI and a Fiesta 1.25. Each fully loaded with people.

The girl that drives the Fiesta 1.25 said that she had 120 mph on the clocks before, which for a car that the stats say can only do 106 I told her she was 'stupid'. No way could her car do 120...

We got on the motorway and left the kia behind imediately... I pulled away (slowly with a full load, sigh) - reaching (what my speedo said) 110 mph with ease... the fiesta kept close behind, then as my speedo said 112 - she started to drop off into the distance... So I pulled back into the inside lane and slowed back to 70... She comes past and her passengers are all like 'ahaha we're kicking your ass' - so I pulled back into the middle lane and follow her... both accelerating at about the same rate (pretty poorly coz of the passengers)... Both moving into the outside lane I was following her closely at about 110 mph, she then moved into the middle lane and we both started accelerating (note this was slightly down hill) - my speed increased to 116 mph at about 6k RPM (should be 120 shouldn't it at 6k?) - this fiesta was still slowly pulling away (like a couple of mph faster)...

I asked her afterwards what speed she saw and she said '120' again...

Both cars have a official stat figure of 106 mph... both 75 bhp...

I don't believe my car can go 116 mph, I know its speedo inacuracys - but how much are they out by? surely mine couldn't be out 10 mph and her's 14?

or could they?

Discuss... P.s. the roads were clear and no dangerous manouvers were done, no undertaking and plenty of space were given between cars, I do not think street racing is cool, and I don't speed outside schools...

Thanks,

Paul J

id also like to point out that this was on the m20 and there was not another car on the moptorway at this time.

yea but that hasn't got anything to do with the inaccuracy of the speeds.
there could be inaccuracies in digital speedos as well

When manufacturers test speeds they do it in a number of ways, including digital equipment mounted in the car and Radar guns similar to those used by the police. They ignore inacuracies such as tyre distortion at speed and so they're FAR more acurate than the crappy speedo u get in the car. If a corsa 1.2 Sxi could do 120 (or even 130)mph, Vauxhall would make dam sure they told everybody about it!!

I found my Speedo's to be highly unreliable. They're too tight around the crotch area and the elasticated waist perishes after only a couple of months.

Stick to swimming shorts - something from Quicksilver or Reef and you should be ok.

I don't have 120 on my clock. Just the typical 12 hours on a sexagesimal clock.

Perhaps you are referring to a decimal clock?

Well that would be the first time the speedometer has been referred to in this thread.

All this talk of speedo's and clocks is very ambiguous and people should have more consideration when posting to use the correct terms.

Hehe, in a way I'm kinda relieved that my speedo is showing the wrong speed... I know getting caught doing say 106 and 116 still means I'd be in shit... but if it was 106 I wouldn't feel as guilty ...

and looking at that example, if it shows say 105 mph on the clocks I'm probably doing under 100mph!

So its all good.
