And it was sat on zero, put some water in and I heard a hiss from the living room - radiator burst.

Not too much water but it's an expense I don't need

That's the second one I've had fail - the bathroom towel rail went the other month.

Might I be doing something wrong or are they just five years old and prone to it?

whats burst the radiator itself or the pipework to it?

If the system was never flushed properly or treated this can lead to corrosion in the system pretty quickly, seen it on systems 1 year old believe it or not!

If I were you and to get you running again isolate both sides of the radiator and top the system up, and just hope the trv and lockshield ain't passing ;-)

They can corrode reasonably quickly if not properly flushed through. Whenever we have to get one properly flushed out we also tell the plumber to stick a magnaclean on too, just to catch any other bits of corrosion floating around/comes loose.

Its the radiator itself which has failed, the seem on the top has come apart.

This would probably get put down to wear and tear,NHBC isnt worth the paper its printed on imo

usually the water quality that causes the radiator to corrode on the seams,
