i was in sainsburys today and i saw like a massive section of steaks and they are not cheap , it got me thinking, if no one buys them what will they do with them? even if they reduce them and no on buys them do they just throw them away?

Yep - just bin them. I'm not sure that the staff can even take them.
Food hygiene laws are a bit silly but supposedly to protect consumers - some stuff they sell is perfectly good to eat for a few days yet. Meat less so as it can be risky, veg is the worst culprit.
Mind you, the shelves at my local supermarkets have cock all on them.

AFAIK it's all supposed to be binned now, if it's past the use by date they can't sell it at all.

I know a guy that used to have a shop called 888 in Radcliffe. It was a frozen food place and he said he buys up stock that supermarkets can't sell and freezes it then selld it on. He retired about a year ago so i have no way to find out if it's true but i have no reason to doubt him.

Past the use by date, can't be sold, even to members of staff (lol), goes back on the lorry to a magical place.

I used to work for the Coop and if it was close to its sell by date it would be reduced by 10% the night before and then again the next day around 1pm by 25% then again at 6pm by 50% and if it was still there at 8-9pm it would reduced to 50-70p if it was meat other chilled stuff 20p. In the rare occasion it was still there at 10pm it was the bin.

yeah if it's passed the use by date (not best before) then it got marked up and binned.
threw away hundreds of pounds worth of meats when i worked in somerfields.
my mum and brother works in waitrose and is always bringing home chicken and steaks for 20p's even though the original prices were £3+

there must be some right bargains to be had if you could find out exactly when meat etc is about to be pulled from the shelves.

We had people going through the bins at Woolworths. Looking for toys and stuff. So one of my duties was to smash the fuck out of any bits thrown in the skip. Was awesome
