She's doing a lot of miles now and her E46 325 is costing a lot in fuel, we're getting rid of my BM too so will have my MX5, which can't really be used for long distances.

Basically, she needs a diesel of some sort.

Budget is 6k MAX.

So far, we've considered;

Astra 1.9 CDTi 150
Fiesta Zetec S TDCi
Golf mk5 1.9 TDi (not a lot about for the money though)

And varients of the above, like Vectras with the same engine etc.

We need it to be reliable, economical and not ridiculously slow and incomfortable.

Am I missing something really obvious?

I have a Fiesta Zetec S tdci and its used for the exact same reasons as yourself mate, brilliant car wee car as it looks great, costs £30 a year to tax, gets 100+ miles out of a tenner which is great considering diesel costs more than petrol. Its pretty nippy as well being a 1.6td and if you wish it can be mapped to 120-130bhp 200lbft and the fuel consumption gets better when you do lol. Its well equipped inside as well.

i'd go for the astra.

the fiesta is nice but the astra has 2 more doors, much more space inside if you ever needed it and possibly has a 6th gear, whereas the fiesta doesn't.

The Astra would be a 3 door.

We've looked at A4s and Passats but all the 2.5TDi A4s are moon miles or automatics and I wouldn't touch an Audi auto with a 50ft pole, they're shockingly unreliable with miles.

The Bora is a good shout, but she's had 2 mk4 Golf 1.9TDis (one an Anni) so she's not so keen on anoter lol.

Only thing about the fabias is the seat fabric, we'd need to find a leathered one which isn't easy.

What's up with the seats?

Unless she's doing manual labour they aren't that difficult to keep clean.

Don't like them, they're backwards and don't look right, the lightest part should always be the inner.

I would have thought the Astra was the best choice no? Or similar (ie. Focus/Golf/Leon or whatever)

Going from a 325 into a little Fiesta is going to be a bit of a big change. I know I wouldn't want to downsize by that much.
