Undo the large hub nut? or by undoing the 4 stub axle bolts and removing the stub axle assembley with the drum?

i believe it can be done both ways but whats the most pain free

Remove the large nut and split pin. IIRC removing the four stub axle bolts will give you an entire backplate, drum, stub axle assembly, that will still need splitting.

i think the drum will split if you undo the 4 stub axle bolts just takes the stub axle with it

might be wrong, this is for a ford puma btw, but most drum set ups are pretty universal

You want to get the drum off carrier/back plate or you want the carrier off the rear beam?

Do you mean removal of the drum assembly, or as the title says splitting the drum

Big castellated centre nut, get it undone. Then as Willay says, get the hammer out and start bashing (back off the adjusters on the shoes to retract them first)

Release hand brake, remove stub axle nut and beat off with copper/rubber mallet..

trouble with removing the hub nut is i dont have a torque wrench that will tighten back to 235nm

so i wondered if it could be done by removing the stub axle bolts on the rear

Of course it wont. That will just remove the stub axle and you'll have to release the brake line and handbrake cable to get the assembly off. Then you'll still need to undo the castle nut to get to the brake shoes.

Sure? i thought the only thing holding the drum to the backing carrier was the stub axle which gets bolted through the drum carrier to the rear beam

I'd be worried if I was left with a blue rectangle that says "Image is remotely linked or blocked by firewall. fiestaturbo.com".

Just undo the big nut in the middle and take drum off? Tighten back up till its tight, no need to a torque wrench. I thought you were meant to be quite clued up Steve.

its meant to be 235nm for a reason so yu dont over tighten and damage the wheel bearing iirc

plus i hate faffing around with rear drums so have always steered clear of them in the past
