I like the 5 Turbo and I'm not a french car fan, someone did tell me why the head gaskets go so often and how to get around it, but I've forgot what was said.

I have a big spec R5 and have owned 3 of them.
I wouldn't touch it to be honest due to the fact it has been 'boyed up', the fact it has been sprayed an obnoxious colour has killed it's value. Better to sell your car and hunt for a genuine car in a factory colour. These cars are getting rarer by the day and the purists don't want some keved up chariot. Getting any paintwork matching (the rear light panels) will be impossible on a custom hue mix.
In terms of rust they are exceptionally good, the main things are that the skirts act as water traps and cause the sills to go in the seams, the tailgates rot from the inside out and they go behind the headlights.
You will get people saying they are impossible to work on which is complete bollocks. Once the array of hoses are off it is a very primitive push-rod, chain driven engine
Here is mine (looking tidier than it does at present);

I bought it off my mate who spent £15k on the engine alone in a 5 year period.
He over-revved it and stripped a few threads from the rocker so had it fully rebuilt. I kept saying how the main jet should have been changed to help the rings bed in again.
Anyway, I was running it in again at about 22PSI (I would run at 32 normally) and I melted the living daylights out of it. When I took it apart, sure enough, they had put a smaller main jet in.
Just fucking lazyness really.
£2k+ down the drain in no time. It did murder a Lotus Esprit twin turbo V8 a few minutes before letting go though.

That R5 is hideous. I wouldn't be seen dead in it. I'd actually feel a right c*nt being seen getting out of it! I'd rather drive a dawoo matiz, at least you're not trying to look like a cock driving it!

I'd go for the GTT as they are rare as hell and far more interesting than an Astra!
But R5 GTT's are about as unreliable as you get when it comes to cars. It would have to be a second car and you might get to drive it a couple of times a year

Seeing as we're throwing pics in Mine, totally standard.
Loved mine, quick little car. Never let me down apart from water pump giving up on the motorway. When you own one you sort of always have one eye on the temperature gauge anyway, so it didn't overheat and pop. Just repaired it and off it went again. They look a bit old fashioned, especially inside, but I found the seats very comfy! Anyone over the age of 25 can appreciate them, but I find young people just look on them as pieces of shit these days.
I'd get one again, but I'd definitely be interested in it's history. I wouldn't buy that purple one at face value myself. Mine only had one owner before me since '89 so I knew exactly what was going on with it.
Manual choke FTL too.

If the R5 isn't being held together with rust, I'd go for it.
