I'm staying at my Mum's for a week or so. They have Sky but no movie channels which i quite like. Can i litrally take my Sky card and put it into there box?

Nope, you'll need your box too - the cards are "paired up" to the box by Sky

The card will work but won't give any premium channels like sports or movies.
Has to be paired with the box.

You could get it to work in a non-Sky reciever such as a Dreambox / Technomate etc... but not in another Sky box. The cards are "paired" to the box for anti-piracy reasons.
He could ring Sky and ask them to re-pair it to the other box, but then he'd have to do the same again when he takes it back home... too much fucking around really, and Sky may get a bit funny about it.
