Got the go ahead to get a new bike on the Cycle Scheme.

So, pick me a new bike for about £500. Will be used mostly for commuting on some questionable paths.

The shortlist so far, baring in mind I have no idea about bikes:

you would struggle to get hold of a 2009 scott now anyway so you'd either have to look at 2010 models or just go for the specialized.

Haven't been on links as on my phone but you can't go wrong with a Specialized - exactly what I would have suggested.

the 2010 aspect 45 is the same price as the specialized you posted so is better to compare it with. in that case i would favour the scott but only becuase i like to be different. it also looks great in white and blue!
Deano - what are tektro auriga brakes like? i have no experience of these.

No idea really. I used to work in a bike shop about 3 years ago and used to sell loads of Specialized with no problems or people coming back with issues.

Most brakes in the £500 bike price bracket are much-of-a-muchness. You only need to be picky when you're paying that much for brakes alone.

I would try and find a 2009 rockhopper.
Similar to the hardrock you posted but the build quality will be 10X better

I have this, it was on offer at £299.99 about 2 months ago

Ideal for commuting/leisure riding but for serious XC i wish i'd have saved for something built a bit better.
