The misses and I have a week off in July but we have no holiday booked as we can't afford it. However I fancy doing something and having bit of an adventure.

I would quite like to go to Northern France to see the beaches where the allied invasion happened and where the major war cemeteries are - particularly the one on Saving Private Ryan.

However I have no real clue what any of it is called, where to go etc - all I really know about is the crossing.

So has anyone done it before? Any good 'guide' websites? Any info would be great

think they do holiday tour things with a guide as well , not sure where to find out though.

Oh I know of the beaches etc, I meant of the cemeteries.

I'd prefer this, including cemetery. But as said, I know nothing about beaches etc.

I have but it was years and years ago with School. I remember seeing the Bayeux Tapestry too.

Normandy is about 4 hours in the car from Calais.

I went to Belgium with high school, Belgian farmers still regularly plough up bullets and shells!

I can't remember every where we went, we went to preserved trenches though and several cemeteries.

The difference between allied and a german cemetary is quite eerie, Langemarck is a mass German grave, it's dark and it's cold and you feel almost as if there's some sort of prescence.

I went in 2008 to Normandy. Stayed in Bayeux in a navotel and visited the war cemetries, museums and beaches. Was really good, but we spent around 7-800 quid in total for 5 days.
Could have gone abroad and sat on a beach, but instead we were in the freezing cold and rain

Well worth it though. Lots of other stuff to do too apart from the war stuff.
