Repair install?

Do you need to boot that particular install, if not just get the data backed up and format.

If it's blue screening on the recovery console is there a hardware fault.

Don't know really, it's my mate's lad's laptop, not sure what he needs off it.

If a repair install doesn't work there aren't many options.

Plug it into a caddy and get the stuff off or just install Vista ontop of the current OS without formatting, then get the data.

If it's something hardware that's a different matter.

Got a licence sticker on underneath it, might just get the ISO and do a full new install?

Lack of DVD writer could slow me down

That would work, if it fails on the install it's probably a hardware problem.

It would have to be an OEM dvd for that manufacturer for the key to work, otherwise you may need to phone microsoft to activate.
