O.K basically I drive an Astra F estate at the moment but been considering a 4x4 for a while mainly because I live in a rural hilly area and when it snows it is horrendous and cannot get upto my house in a 2wd car. Have thought of snowchains/snow tyres but not too sure about them. I want a 4x4 thats reliable, good on fuel, does'nt have to be a proper SUV, a 4wd estate car would do,ground clearance not too important. Have considered Suzuki Jimny/Panda 4x4 but they're too small as I have a labrador and often need the space of an estate car. Also Vauxhall would be good as I work for Vauxhall and can get cheap parts!. Have thought Frontera but they do drink fuel. Thanks!

You won't realistically get 40mpg though, especially for £500.

Get 40-47 mpg out the astra estate, and yes it is in neutral down hill haha I am a total miser on buying fuel mainly because its over taxed and I feel I am filling Camerons pocket everytime I fill up. Whats this bio diesel like ? anyone know how much it is?

I didn't say you wouldn't get it out of anything, you'll be very very lucky to get it out of an old heavy 4x4.
Neutral downhill uses more fuel than leaving it in gear, fail.

40mpg in a 4x4 Have fun with that.
Although tbf, a guy at my dad's work has a Freelander or something and his current project is trying to get it to 40mpg, at the moment he's on about 39.7 or something A K&N Panel filter helped apparently.
You'd be better leaving it in gear when going downhill (with an injection engine anyway) as the injectors shut off and the engine is turned by the wheels.

when you leave it in gear coasting it doesnt use any fuel, when your in neutral its idling and using fuel to keep the engine going.

Shit I'll be leaving it in 2nd tomorrow doing 50 hitting limiter for the laugh then. People at the bus stop look worried as I screech round a real steep hill in neutral and loosing a wheel trim on the way round the corner its scarey 60 mph in neutral downhill !
