depends on your contract

When i was on call I got a flat fee (think it was £80 a week) and then so much for attending site and then hours spent on site

Will depend what your contract states

then ask for your contract be be reviewed

otherwise do not go on call as they do have a leg to stand on unless its in your contract

Some people get a daily rate for being on-call, then further money if they have to do a call-out. Others don't, but everything is up for negotiation so talk to management.

i know. even if it was £50 a week at least it would be worthwhile. Is there a law or is that bullshit?

Dont think theres a law but its probably something you'd need to have out with a boss. Tell them that if its a thankless task & isnt written into your contract then you'll no longer be doing it, see what he says. Make it clear your not looking for him to make you rich but feel you should get something for going over & above your line of duty on a daily basis.

you should be getting standby pay for it. I have been on call every other week for the last 6 years and have always been paid standby. if i'm giving up 26 weeks of my life every year for the companies benefit then i want paying for it! not a chance i'd be doing it 365 days a year without any extra pay.
how did it come about that you were on call? i know some of our salary paid employees are asked to be contactable all year round but for this they are given a mobile phone that the company pays for. they never have to go into work though so it's a good deal.

Our engineers are paid a flat rate and then for every time they're called out then for every unit they replace. Being on call and not being paid regardless sounds a bit shit tbh.

Surely you cant be on call 24/7? How do you have a social life??
