I was going to get a MacBook but after having a play with a few of them today I just don't like them

While I was browsing, I saw some Samsung laptops that I tried out and the keyboard feedback and screen seemed quite good I thought, so I think I will give up on the MacBook idea and go for a Windows laptop instead.

What are people's opinions on them? Are they good build quality etc. or shit like HP/Compaq laptops?

my ex had a new samsung a few month ago, and it seemed very good build quality. i get what you mean about the feel of it, the buttons feel more solid in use.

You're probably not interested, but i have a Samsung M50 laptop for sale.

Nice wide screen, DVD writer etc.
I've bumped up the ram to 2GB...and its in excellent condition.

£140 + postage (and that includes the case)

Basic spec is:

2Ghz Processor
2GB RAM
100Gb Hard Drive
3 USB ports
17" Black Back screen
54g WLAN
Bluetooth
Nvidia 6600 GPU

Its been re-built with a new and clean install of Windows XP Pro SP2 + all updates.

Its obviously not as good as the Smasung laptops you can buy brand new these days, but thats hopefully thats shown in the price.

I have the R530 and the screen is amazingly bright (LED backlit) and the keyboard is ace.

Had a HP before and it was terrible in comparison (G70).

I've got a 3 year old Samsung R40 laptop and it's been brilliant. The only thing wrong with it is that the battery completely died due to me leaving it plugged into the mains all the time whilst using it.

Other than my own user error nothing would stop me getting another - excellent build quality.

I have mine plugged in I'd say 90% of the time. Samsung have some software which detects this and only charges the battery to 80% to help prolong the lift of the battery

Mine must've been too early for that.

It was only when I took it to a shoot one day and it died during startup that i found out that charging all the time was so bad for them

I've got one of the new Macbooks and I think they're miles better than any Microsoft laptop i've used before, but then again its all down to personal preference and needs really

why didn't you like the macbook? I love mine, don't think i'd buy a windows based laptop again, especially as even if you want to use windows you can run it in bootcamp. I suppose price is a factor mind.

Same as Norcy and Alunj, I too have a mbp and could never go back to a windows laptop. 1. Build quality is amazing (still looks brand new after months, dropped it a few times too) 2. The multitouch pad (using anything else just seems rubbish now) 3. The backlit keyboard (Again other keyboard just seem rubbish and dated) also don't forget os x, 1000% improvement on any windows iv used. After owning my Macbook Pro, everything else just feels like old crap tech.

Edit: Theres loads more reasons but don't want to write an essay

I always go for Dell, never had any issues in the 3 years i've been using them. Also come with 3 years waranty.

Same as opinion as you Sam, hp are shite. We purchase hp for customers as they are cheap and cheerful but that's all down to cost.

I really like Apple products but again our customers won't pay.

Can't really advise on Samsung, not had that much experience with them. Just used the odd Net Book here and there.

Right, im more than sure my Macbook's supposed to have a backlit keyboard, does it just work automatically or is there a setting you have to change? Either that or mine doesn't actually have it ha

Never had an issue with the Dells i've had. Macbooks on the other hand have always failed in one way or another (edit - plastic around the trackpad has gone a few times, superdrive failed)

I have decided to go for a brand new laptop (thanks anyway Aaron mate for the offer of yours) in the end.

I went for the Samsung R530 in the end. It has a HDMI output as well so I might try it out on our TV and see what it's like when I get it.

That would explain it. I'm sure I say this every time but using my XPS makes me sick because it's so poorly built. Never again

The Inspiron <whatever the model number is, it's a newish 17" widescreen> my other half bought a few months ago seems well built, although I think the jury's out re. the touchpad on it (I'm fussy on my trackpads as you may have noticed - this is what put me off the MacBook)!
