I loved my SEH, miss it lots. Would do it again if i could afford it. XE ruined the car tbh...

8v + carbs ftw!

XE = Expensive if it goes wrong.
8v = Get a whole new engine for £50.
XE is a great conversion, but its a costly engine. An 8v (in 130bhp guise) may not have the outright power, but its got a better torque curve low down in the revs when most time is spent.
16v will obviously pull harder top end.
But an 8v, cam'd, flowed, with some twin carbs, should see 160-170bhp, and it'll still go like the clappers in a stripped out corsa.
If you want outright performance, sacrificing all cornering (what little there already is) capilbilities, get a turbo.

Or a C/X16XE/X18XE1 on Tb's with headwork, cams, full exhaust for high-reving power without sacrificing the handling

Best engine ever !

But like many people have said XE or 8v engines is probably your best bet, tried and tested and very common for a reason.
Just make sure you get the 130bhp 8v engine as the other one is 115bhp.
