what do you need to do?

just disconnect the battery? is there anything to do with ABS that needs removing?

I've always just disconnected the Battery Earth/Negative

remove anything flamible near by (on both sides)

have an extinguisher near by

Just disconnect the battery.

its the wheel arch where the fuel tank/filler cap is?

does that matter?

i'd possibly remove the tank and filler tube - dont want to go boom

No need to remove the tank unless you're welding right next to it or directly above it. Just watch that you're not going to melt anything, be sensible and look twice weld once. From the fuel filler cap to the tank is a sealed unit, unless you have any leaks I can't see it going on fire.

Put a welding blanket or piece of metal in the way so weld splatter/sparks can't hit vulnerable areas.

Or if you do remove the fuel tank, dont leave it lying near by where sparks can get to it

new theory is that to leave battery connected to protect ecu from spikes and there is a spike protector connected to battery

i have a spike protector so dont disconnect the battery, but if your doing it at home as a one off then there is no point buying one so just disconnect the battery

If you dont have a surge protector disconnect the battery as mentioned above. Depending on where your welding on the car, remove any trim, carpet etc... if its directly above, it doesnt take much for a car to go up in flames when welding, so keep an eye out.

Also make sure all the metal surfaces are clean and shiny, and always tack weld yyour new piece of metal to be welded before you think about seaming.
