Lad i work with currently earning around £20k has been head hunted by another 'Building Soceity' for a position at £35k with annual performance based bonus of 8-12%.
He went for the interview on monday and was told he had been successful today.
I can do his job with my eyes closed and in terms of the level of experience in the department, hes nothing special, i guess some people are just lucky. I suppose im only jealous

By "work with" do you mean just someone in your office/place of work or someone who does the same job as you?

I achieved a higher end of year rating than he did.
This isn't about blowing my own trumpet though.

This seems quite simple really, Work harder instead of bitching about not getting a break in life!
If your ambitious then you should not just do your job you should do it to a standard which makes you stand out!

Maybe he has smoozed his way better with people that matter and got himself noticed.
Most of the time with head hunting its more of who you know and not what you know.

He must have put it out there in some way.
I would guess he's just applied for another job and they've interviewed him in the normal way.
Sounds like quiet a leap in salary. Either he was seriously undervalued in that job, or they're taking a big risk, or those aren't the facts.

The leap in salary could be imanginary but the job requires him to comute a further 30-40mins AND allows him to quit his second evening job therefore the extra salary would have to outweigh this for it to be beneficial.
He tells me that the new position requires him to manage a small team of people, despite having no management experience. Maybe they haven't fully understood the extent of his current role.

Its why people attend these 'networking' events which others think are just bullshit. They end up getting known by a lot of people and when something comes up they'll be the ones getting the call over someone totally unknown.

Sounds like he's filled a form in on Monster and bigged himself up a bit, gone to the interview and done a bit more and pulled it off.
Looking positively, you won't be managed by him. There's a small team of people going to hate this move a lot more than you do.

First thing that springs to mind is "team leader" - means fuck all anywhere especially to anyone he's supposed to be 'managing'.
Also the schmoozing and who you know not what you know is mostly true, use it to your advantage. You're making business contacts while you work not mates. Don't be afraid to be a bit of a badger in progressing. Last two jobs I've got on word of mouth alone. Job I had before this one was with Recaro1 and I got that from whoring myself - making myself useful, impressing the right people, talking to the people you interface with on more than a business basis - even if it's just remembering that they went away for the weekend or whatever.
tl;dr version - schmoozing will get you far.
Also talk to recruitment agencies - get on the books and keep in contact with at least one person from the agency even if you're turning down the jobs you don't want.

We both work in financial crime, his new position is managing a group of people but still within that field.

Maybe he was acting a bit below his level. If he felt he was being underpaid then he wouldn't want to put in 100%, maybe he was actually far more capable than he ever showed you and whoever interviewed him saw a different side to him.
That or he is a massive bullshitter of the highest degree

may have picked up a phone at the right time. The amount of times I have picked up a phone in the office only to be met with by a specialist recruitment company is silly. Once they establish who you are, and what you do - its anyones game.
