Just installed a wireless CCTV camera and recording software. If the CCTV detects motion it records for one hour to a mp4 file on the PC.
What would be the best way to manage these files automatically. Ideally I would like anything older than a month to be deleted. How do I do this

the cctv we have at work that was only cheap came with its own software that motion detects and deletes oldest vids when running low on space etc. did it come with any software? some of the cctv i have seen do it without asking

As above, normally does it itself, should be an option in the settings.
An hour is a bit long is it not? 30 seconds is a better option then it'll continue going if it detects movement, recording for an hour every time a fly goes across it will get boring very quickly.

better to do more than 30 seconds. I would think 15 minutes be ideal.
Because if they go off camera shot and you can hear them talking or something?

It's not even the space issue, it's being able to effectively look through the footage.

Are these any good?
I mean the software at "seeing" the movement. Or are they triggered by PIR of something.

The software will trigger no problem, you can set sensitivity.
I've got an ebay DVR card from a few years back, cost me the best part of £100 I think.
It records and is reliable, the software is terrible though, it's really difficult to for instance fast forward through a whole day then pinpoint what you want to see, end up going back and forward, back and forward.
Can also have it set to record using an external trigger such as a PIR.

I'm pretty sure you can use robocopy commands to delete files older than x days if you're handy with scripting. Then just schedule the script or batch file to run every day
