Went into halfords the other day and was speaking to someone that seemed clued up about mountain bikes. So I asked about tyre pressures (on & off road) and he said anything up to 60psi on road, but he runs his at 50psi (thought this was a lot?) and off road at around 35psi.
So I got home and set both tyres to 50psi. And my god, they seem WAY too hard, u can feel every little bump and the bike jumps all over the place
So, what pressures to do u lot run? Don't use the bike for anything fancy yet, just commuting and the odd bike ride down the canal
Thanks

That doesn't sound too far off tbh. Pretty much what I tend to do.

i tend to stick to 40psi but even that can be a little hard on cobbles etc. this is why my next bike will be a full sus XC.

Oh right. Seems way to stiff. I'll drop a few psi when I take it off road then

Generally speaking the rockier it is, the less PSI you need. But obviously climbing you don't want it super soft otherwise you lose and lot of power through the tyres.
Off road - use what feels right for the conditions.
Road - hard as fuck for the least rolling resistance.

i run 50psi on schwalbe cx comp for road use, harder the tyre the less in contact with the road so smaller rolling resistance which means less effort, same side effect is u feel every bump. Also lower preasure with squash as you pedal resulting in a loss of power here also.

If you are doing a rocky route you want them at higher PSI to help avoid getting snake bites...
I run mine 45 PSI on the rear and 30-35 PSI on the front generally all the time as pretty much everything I ride is mega rocky.

If you've got good tough tyres then running them soft on the rocks is pretty good...

Maybe if you're running some heavy dual ply DH tyres that works but for you're average XC tyre if you run them soft on the stuff like I ride you go through a lot of tubes quickly.

Yeh doesn't seem a bad idea. 50psi seems ridiculous on the road and I fucking hate it. I don't mind loosing some resistance to gain move comfort and control.

I run 90psi front and rear on my bmx which i use a fair amount on road.
Mountain bike thing is keept at roughly 25psi as its never used on smooth roads and the like. Although currently its 0psi after bending the rim.

If you run high PSI on the rocky stuff you'll be all skitty and have no control. Just run DH tubes in XC tyres.
When ever I used to do 'epics' in Wales or the Peaks, we'd change tyres to something a bit chunkier.
And I've never got a pinch flat
