The likelyhood is that if you were to fall you'd bounce off the thing not giving you a chance to open a parachute. Only reason I can think they don't give them one is that a full body harness would get in the way and be a total pain in the arse. Not to mention the training needed for it.

He does hook himself on every now and again to get a rest, says on the vid that to be strapped in the whole time it would take 3x as long to get up or something. And I bet once you do that a couple of times you'd get used to it - imagine it was only a couple of metres off the ground, climbing a ladder wouldn't be such a challenge. Probably a case of mind over matter.

we get winded off the bridge at 40mph gusts and that only goes up to 370 odd feet, imagine the wind speeds he must get up there

the thing that scares me is when he leans over to grab the top to pull himself up from the inside ladders

I could climb it, but i couldn't get down.. lol!
Getting ups easy, getting downs the hard part.
Surely they get like what those guys who work on the scaffolding get(riggers are they called) which is danger money. Big money.

Rotors generate lots of static electricity, would probably be more dangerous to do that.
