anyone have any? if so what sort of return have you had over what time scale?
just sold a house and i'm thinking of buying 10k of premium bonds instead of putting it into a high interest account. i heard that the return is normally better than the interest most banks offer.

i'm open to suggestions about where else i could invest some cash also if you have any ideas?

Depends on your luck. Parents have had loads of £25 and the odd £1k cheque. They've got £60k in there tho.

To be fair the return can be very low on these for the timescale you have them sat there. I would wait a few months as intrest rates are set to rise in the new year and should offer you arround 3% net return after tax etc etc

I had 2k in them for a year - won nothing.

Had £50 in them prior to that for the last 25 years and I've won about £50 twice I think in all that time!

maybe it would be better to just go for a decent rate savings account then. i was planning on giving it 5 years but i don't want to sell them after that time and only have what i started with. especially if the interest rates are set to increase.

The only reason I put the 2k in there was because that 2k was going to spent in a years time to pay something off that I bought on 0% finance with no payments for 12 months so thought I may as well give it a go and see how I get on.

Have you got an ISA?

My mate has 30k in them and he gets a cheque just about every month for various amounts, it's better than having it in a savings account when you have that kind of money to play with.

Go online and enter the bond holders number. Pretty sure you would of had a letter through if you had won though

They're probably just as good as your average ISA. The way things are now, saving money isn't going to be profitable. Only sensible

There quite good that way.

You can instruct them to release the funds the day after the forth coming draw. I think its just wired into your account as well

I think i got £50/£100 or so and in the 25yrs of having them i've won £25. Brothers got £15k's worth and has never won anything. If you're not planning to touch the cash for a while then i'd look at a high interest (some of them around 4.5-5% now) fixed term bond as you'll see a better return.

I've got all of my savings in premium bonds at the moment. Did have it in ISAs but the rates suck so not much to lose by putting them in PB.

They only pay out a % of the total amount of cash invested though, so despite being a 'lottery' you are only likely to get a return based upon what they pay out.

ie. if they are paying 2% on everything, expect 2% return on what you've put in. Doesn't always work that way, but long term will more than likely do.

I had £1k for about 2 years and didn't win a thing.

I've recently cashed them in to go towards my new house.
