Can get a decent Passat or mk4 Golf TDI for that money.

I managed to get a 2L TDCI Mondeo for £2k on an '02 plate with 50k miles on it. And it's a fantastic car.

I seriously looked at the 115bhp golfs. Do about 45mpg, and I think they look the business too!

306's aren't a bad car, the earlier 1.9td is alright, tunes up easily as well iirc. HDi would probably be nicer mind

Had my old 306 Dturbo safely running 1.2 bar boost just by upping the fuel.Really transformed the car and it went like fuk.

Not a bad drive either, my mate has one, not the most refined thing in the world but pleasant in my opinion. He's not upped the fuelling but still, we did disconnect the EGR valve and it makes a difference mind.
Damn sight more comfortable than any of my corsa's are/were

Passat's and A4's too big? They arent exacly Range Rovers...the bigger car you go for usually the better bang for buck you get, with engines, condition, and toys
