This is whats wrong with my PS3 so this company reckon a new hard drive is needed and charge £40. Is that alright? Otherwise what else would I do, or should I even trust a company like this?

The ps3 hdd is just a laptop hdd, you can pick up a 500gb one for £50 now and takes 5 mins in install and only 1 screw, so see what size they are installing and if its worth it for the price.

Oops I was meant to post a link to the companies site explaining what was wrong with it and the charge.
Basically when you turn it on the menu doesnt fully load it just comes up with a black screen with the waves in the background which according to this company means I need a new hard drive.

Do a new one yourself, as has been said above you can get one for about the same cost with a much larger capacity.
For example:

£24 120gb http://www.ebuyer.com/product/150516
you need to have a usb stick with the firmware on it i think, but as far as changing the hdd it literally is one screw they were designed to be user replaceable
