If you take your driving test in an automatic you're only allowed to drive automatics

Well I wouldn't like the thought of someone who's only ever drove autos, driving a manual without any instruction

Yes, it's in Section 12, Codes. This is on the back of a photo licence.

Will appear as a number 78 or 106 endorsement in that column depending on the vehicle class.

Thought this was true for the UK too?

Learn in an automatic, you are only licensed to drive an automatic, but if you learn manually, you're licensed to drive both manual AND automatic?

That is correct and I don't know the exact distribution but I think the point is that most Americans are only licensed for autos.
