Is there any such thing like this? Im just out of reach of a hotspot near my house and wondered if there is anything that i can plug into my computer that would be able to receive signals from further away

You can get Wifi Repeaters but obviously you'd need to place it within range of the original source signal, which i'm assuming isn't possible. And i'm also assuming that you don't have access to the source/router/hotspot, so the only option you have left is to use a bigger antenna either attached to your wireless card or setup a repeater (some routers can be configured to act like a repeater, certainly a lot of linksys/d-link routers that can run custom firmware like DD-WRT) in your house and attached a bigger/high-gain antenna to that.
I'd personally head down the route of getting a wireless card that offers TNC(etc) antenna connector and then either get a high-gain antenna and see if that works, or go with an externally mounted antenna. Latter could be an issue if it's for a laptop though and might be a bit OTT if you aren't too far away.
Willay and DaveyLC (from what i remember) might be your best bet for advice as they both have pee'd around wireless antenna gear in the past.

Will that work from within side the building and still be able to pick up wireless connections from a distance?

I guess aircrack somehow lets you use protected networks without knowing passwords etc?
How does it work? Do you need to run a client on you PC, or is it all done from the bridge? i.e. could a phone or a games console connect up if it were succesful in opening a network?

The EOC-XXXX runs linux..
Aircrack runs on the device and you setup a share on another PC or NAS to store the sniffed packets, it then sets to work trying to crack them.
