Think I've buggered my laptop. I think I may have switched it off when it was finishing updating. Now it takes 15mins to get to the log in screen when you first switch it on and god knows how long to load the desktop. Managed to start it up in safe mode and fiddle about but was unresponsive. Now once I log in it gives me a message saying it not a genuine copy of windows which it is.
I don't want to reformat as there is loads of software and data on there that I need. Not really fucked about trying to fix it yet but what are my options? Start it in safe mode and see if I can reverse the updates? Or try and get the data off it that I want to an external hard drive?
Any other suggestions?

Under your laptop you probably have a windows serial to enter in the activation.
The likelihood is, if you click activate it won't even ask for one, it's happened to me when I changed some hardware around.
That's assuming you can activate?

It comes up a blank screen with text in the bottom left corner saying something about not valid windows software. Can't really do anything.
Seems to have loaded the desktop now...after being on for about half and hour.

Oh right, I read it as once you log in you get a message saying it's not a genuine copy of windows.

Ok still not fixed this and its about time I gave it a go
After about 3 hours desktop has loaded but lots of error messages saying programs have failed to load etc. The 'not a genuine copy of windows' never came up though?
Managed to get to system restore but no restore points have been created? I thought Vista did this automatically?
Can you reverse an update somehow?

I think it's a wipe and reinstall job TBH.

Always worth a system restore. Bought a few back from the dead like that.

I would have suggested that too but he's said he's got no restore points to get back to

Surely it created one before the update.

They are supposed to, but I don't know whether it would still do it if system restore is turned off.
