i need a new music system and also want a surrond sound system for xbox playing.
I totally don't know what i need? i know you get amps, av receivers etc, but looking online if i buy a 5.1 surround package you get a sub and then 5 satelite speakers, which i had before in a 2.1 system and blew the speakers listening to music.
would i be better getting a home hifi and try to connect xbox to that and then buy some small satelite speakers for the rear?
thinking an amp and some speakers to start, but what type of amp will be able to connect with xbox
am of NOOB

Just get a decent 5.1 setup and connect it to xbox via Optical.
http://www.google.co.uk/products/catalog?q=panasonic+5.1&oe=&cid=9245192051584303335&ei=OQsKTefXNpTg2gT-zdilDQ&sa=title&ved=0CDoQ8wIwCTgA#p
I have that but not bluray. Speakers are same(ish) and is a nice bit of kit.

Yeah sure.
It says 1000w but thats the combined wattage of all the 5 speakers put together.
I used to have a samsung 5.1 with little speakers and the player is still going. Speakers lasted about 3 years.
Bass/Mid will kill speakers. But with the sub you will be able to EQ it all correctly so your speakers put out tops and mids and sub handles the bass.
I dont use mine for music but films sound awsome through it.

Why would bass/mid kill speakers?

see, i'm not too fussed about having a blu-ray player or dvd as i don't really watch films at home, but would like surrond when playing xbox.
but also like loud music, so wonder if i'd be better off buying a music amp separate and two beefy speakers with a sub box, then buy some small rear speakers for xbox playing.
just don't know if such an amp exists? and how i meant to connect it up

Would just go for £400 worth of DVD 5.1 surround then.
Cant seem to find any 5.1 amps. Cant see them been cheap anyways.
OR
Buy a budget (ish) 5.1 DVD player, bin the speakers and buy 4 new bookshelf speakers

For 400 I'd be getting an amp and a set of speakers.
http://www.hyperfi.co.uk/tannoy-home-cinema-speaker-system-p-626.html
http://www.hyperfi.co.uk/onkyo-txsr606-audio-hdmi-receiver-txsr606-black-p-473.html
Plenty left if you wanted better speakers/extra to make it 7.1.
Stereo music isn't as good through the 5.1 amp and speakers as it is through a proper 2 channel hifi setup, this depends on how much of an audiophile you are though.
If you are used to some cheap 2.1 system the 5.1 will be perfect.

I use a Sony 5.1 DVD player connected to my Bravia telly
It's spot on, I found though that connecting the xbox direct to the DVD player causes sound lag however
Connected to the telly it eradicates the lag

What? Distortion kills drivers!
As John said, go down the AV Amp and speaker package as it will generally sound better than a combinded package of similar money (when you're talking about 300-400 quid anyways). Plus you can upgrade parts when money allows (ie: the tannoys listed will be pretty shocking).
Gary - Mission 790s?! Mission haven't made decent speakers since the 90s (760/760i era, got a set here and they still going strong). I'd look at Wharfedale or AE for similar cash (or B&W 6 series, but that would be secondhand).

Tannoy's aren't that bad they were 250 quid speakers for years until they suddenly halfed in price, I've got a set from when they were £250

I agree with john,
Ive got an onkyo av receiver and onkyo speakers, its not amazing for music but xbox/films it is pretty impressive.
