Anyone know if its easy enough to convert a zencart template to magento? Ive found a template for a zencart shop but would like to run magento for my online shop
Ive been in touch with the company and they want £260 to transer the template from zencart to magento

The way I'd tackle a job like this would be to simply render the template that you want and save it as HTML, CSS, Images and any Javascript so you have a static web page. Then I would re-construct those elements into the new system using whatever methods Magento uses for templating. So basically reverse engineer it - check the licence terms though as unless it's a totally free template you might be breaching someone's copyright which might annoy them.

The templating is far too complicated for what it is, plus the overheads/bloat is ridiculous.

Yeah. You need a fairly decent spec server for it not to run slowly I've found!
Plus it's clearly designed by programmers who don't care about workflow/usability resulting in an over-complicated product

Id beg to differ about being over complicated.
Its not worthwhile using it for a small ecommerce site (like i do)
Its more orientated towards the bigger stores. Its a very very clever system, you can do tonnes more than most other packages out of the box.
I have no issues what so ever running it on a shared hosting package. Ok, my traffic is low, but it runs very fast.
Its all about the site owners needs/expectations i guess.

I used to use Zen Cart / Oscommerce for shops, always use Magento now. It's far superior.

Zen Cart isn't exactly the same, it's a modified version of OSC.
Ed's suggestion is probably the best way to tackle this, in fact i wouldn't be surprised if the company you contacted would do something similar rather than do a complete redesign. As said though, you need to check the copyright of the template you want converting before you go ahead.

It's extremely similar Dom. The differences aren't strong enough to praise Zencart and call Oscommerce shit.

Similar but still not the same, different programmers behind Zen Cart from what i remember. But i agree, both are a bit shite although magento is a bit of a ballache tbf

Ive not had a proper look in regards to copyright as ive been pretty busy and trying to get the little one to bed! Ill have a better look soon.
They do two payment options,
1, £70.00 and it states "Purchasing the template @ www.websitetemplates.biz customers has the right to use and customise it. Customers has no right to resale and re-charge the template after it has been sold and customised with the aim it was bought. For using the template in other projects customer should get an additional license."
2, £2000 and it states "Purchasing the template for a unique price allows customers to use the template in several projects. Also, unique price allows to resale the template and use it for commercial purpose. having been purchased, the template is removed from sell immediately, and right on useage is passed into customer."
Im not willing to pay them £260 for them to simply convert a zencart template to magento id rather read up on zencart and use them!
I did contact them a few weeks ago regards editing the template to my style " banners ect" and they said it would be fine to do so.
ill do more digging late on and report back

I beg to differ also!
I use a template, I bought it mainly because its SEO'd, its slick and its cross browser compatible. Its a lot easier to let someone else deal with all the grief of making sure the fancy-shmancy bits all work and I can get on with coding the important business logic.
These days most modern CMS's cache the majority of pages anyway so performance isnt really an issue.

Why not use a CMS like Joomla or Wordpress? You can use a eCommerce addon (there are hundreds) and there are endless lists of templates.

In an ideal world i like to use magento it looks fairly easy to use but ive found a template that fits what i need it for but wont work with magento and tbh i really dont want to pay the £260 to transfer it from zencart to magento
Im thinking use zencart, get the template ive seen plus it would save a LOT of money especially at this time of year!
