Wouldn't worry about it. Chains wear out/break. That's what happens, no big deal.
Unless he has let the chain wear too much and its worn the chain rings down...

Cheap chains are better than expensive ones. You're meant to replace the sprockets and cassette if your chain has worn so much it needs replacing due to breaking too, but you don't have to if you're not all the serious about it all.

Aye, better hope the chain hasn't worn to the cassette and chainset up front. You'll only know if you replace the chain only and it jumps around & doesn't stay in gear.
If the chain snapped because it's worn and stretched it could be a pricey fix.

Depends really if it has Xtr bits I would get same chain set up as cassette and deraillers so anything from £25 - £50 quid.

As said, you might need to replace the rear cassette. You wont need to replace the front as it is a different material so will not wear as fast as the others.
Besides, if you did have to do the front it would cost around £15 a ring

get onto Chainreactioncycles.co.uk as they have a huge sale on at the moment.
I have just replaced a load of parts on my intense downhill bike and i picked up a £50 FSA team issue 9spd chain for £13
replaced a load of other bits as the sale they have on is just to good to say no to!
