Following on in a way from my other thread in GC about insurance, I currently own an old Mondeo estate which will need to have insurance renewed next week and MOT/tax next month.

It needs the following doing to it:

- new power steering pulley/pump (bearings have gone on the pulley)
- new radiator (leaking due to corrosion I think)
- new coil pack and/or new MAF sensor to sort low idle misfire (already fitted new genuine leads and plugs so it's slightly better now)

The car is just under 13 years old and has 100k on the clock with FSH. Since I've owned it (about 2 years now) it's had new brakes all round, new cam belt kit, fan belt and water pump, new (cheapo) front tyres, new middle and rear exhaust silencers.

I would say it's probably worth between £200 to £400, thing is the above stuff that needs doing I reckon will come to about £600-ish including labour (although I would change coil pack/MAF myself).

Insurance renewal for this year is £190 that has to be paid this month, plus MOT (£35?) and a year's tax (£205).

Do I just cut my losses and sell the car for whatever I can get for it and just buy another (newer, nicer car), or do I cough up £1k to keep it on the road this year and hope nothing else breaks?

well you cant count insurance because anything you buy will need it too. id get sonething else though

Well I am in a way, trying to weigh up paying all I need to for this year vs buying a car in better condition and obviously paying for tax/insurance etc.

My calculations lead me to similar totals

I could get myself a fully loaded V6 Omega of similar age for about £500

It needs to be reliable as I rely on my car for my business amongst other things.

If you're thinking about it and you've got the cash spare, then go for it imo. Renewal time is always a good time to pick.

I went on webuyanycar.com and they will only offer me £50 for my car FPMSL

I know, but even on eBay for example completed listings for similar age/mileage/models like mine don't fetch more than £200-£500 for a really pristine example, so it's gotta go!

Quick update for anyone that cares!

I just sold the car on eBay for £360, £310 more than webuyanycar.com wanted to offer me!

Edit: I think my original valuation of £200-£400 was pretty spot on in this case!

I'm not so sure on Japanese (Nissan) build quality/reliability TBH, BMWs I refuse to ever own, so that just leaves Toyota/VAG cars
