Ours is only a 3 axis so it would be fucking hard work to do something that needs cutting on all sides!

we have this type of thing at work for doing joints in wood, but i doubt it could make a head, have done a pint tankard and a bowl though

I think the most complex thing they've done is the casing for an epicyclic gearbox. Some of the parts for that were done in two operations from the top and bottom faces. I think Warwick Uni has one like in the video you posted - was on The Gadget Show a few months back.

Facotry I used to work in had about 100 CNC machines, biggest lathe was the size of a single decker bus. Had an FMS as well. Wonder how many lines of programming that needed.

If you open that vid in youtube it loads faster.

That looks like a multi axis, look at how the billet moves as well pretty impressive.
