Whereas my ex g/f's has been fine for the past 3 years she's owned it, and there's no mention of any gearbox related work in the S/H from the past owner either

Yes M32. It might just be internet hype, but mine actually did break and it wasn't just the internetz telling me it was broken. It wouldn't go into gear and everything.

Thats becasue the oldest ones have started to reach 5- 7 years which is about how long they tend to last in most cases. However some have been known to go much earlier than this.

Its maybe internet hype to those that havnt had issue's,but to those that have had issue's,its a known problem. So this hype has to come from somewhere.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but I just find it ridiculous how as soon as somebody mentions getting a VXR or Astra 150 SRi all people talk about it the gearboxes!

As I say, my ex g/f's 06 plate 150 SRi with 45k on the clocks is fine and shows no sign of dieing, and I've had a couple of mates in the past with VXR's and in the time they've owned them they've not had any issues either.

Its nonsense, overhyped internet crap and people who don't depress the clutch properly and haven't a clue how to drive.

Thats a load of bollocks for a start, I've been driving a hell of a long time and I know how to depress a clutch properly.

Mine went with only 40k on the clock. Cost me £1360 for a rebuild.

One friends went at 50k. He drives quiet steady.

Another one gets death everywhere (more than you can imagine, smashing it through town showing off etc), its done 40k and not a problem.

First car is 06 plate, second 57 plate
