Right i've had the S2000 for 5 years now and its beginning to become a pain in the ass, Now i have my own house and stuff I want a car that I can use for Shopping, picking things up and ultimately family use in the next few years.
Over the last 5 years the Honda has been solid as a rock, so im used to motoring without any bills apart from the usual MOT/TAX.
I dont want to spend any more than 3-5K on a car as i just need something to tie me over for the next 2-3 years till we re-mortgage then look to get something swazzy again!
I only really have 2 choices of cars that I like the thought of:
BMW 325 / 330 CI Sport (2001)
Honda Civic Type R (EP3)
Now ive always liked the e46 and they can be had for anything from 2.5K up, the only thing putting me off is servicing, part prices etc... anyone had any experience with a BMW around these price ranges?
The Type R again now start at 2.5K up and now if there anything like my S2000 then there is little to go wrong with them, the only thing is they kinda have a boy racer image and thats the only thing putting me off?
I think out of the 2 the Type R will be cheaper motoring over the course of a few years?
Peoples thoughts?

get the CTR, i know of loads of people with them around here and no one seems to have any problems with them, apart from my mate that practiced pulling away in every gear, including 6th, and he had to get a new clutch the next day

Octavia
Lots of room
180bhp standard, 210 if you map it
half leather
climate control
prices between 2-5k depending how clean and what kinda milage your after.
1.8T engine, nice and reliable, available on a broad range of other vag models so getting parts is easy if needs be.
I get 35+mpg (thats with 265bhp though...)

The BMW is a much better car than the type R, Ive been in a couple of both cars and the 3 series is a much nicer place to be.

tbh its not that bad, most cars that are on ebay are on piston heads and autotrader, just quicker going through ebay to look at pics etc...

Bemmer stright 6's are bloody bullet proof. Servicing is fine as long as you use an independant plus their forums are full of technical help and how to's.

I've heard about a lack of feel in the steering for pre 2001 cars, think they changed the set up after that, think fad can perfect that statement as i think he mentioned that to me at somepoint aswell.
Seen a couple with rust on the rear arches, will try and get the buyers guide of a forum, two mins.
Edit: One in the link is nice, warning triangle thing is missing from the toolkit.

Posts from bimmerforums.co.uk
yal wish ya bought the 330 for the extra legs..
bad points but not really bad points..
wishbones and bushes a weak spot to most (strangley not mine still on originals from factory at 87k 2001 car on original everything infact battery the lot)
water pump a weak spot but cheap and easy DIY..
check evetything electric works
engine should be ultra smooth a silent hum with a slight whistle to it with no rattles etc....
good service history a must..
no real bad issues on the M54 petrol engine..
leather interiors more disirable
handbrake notorious for been poor but easy to fix
brakes cheap and easy DIY..

My 325ci will be up for sale soon as need something with more doors. Had a fair bit spent on it at BMW recently. I always go to main dealer for servicing/brakes ect.
Look out for movement in the front lower suspension arm. Mine was banging so had to replace them. Did it myself so only cost about £50 but was a pain in the arse to get off!
Also if you test drive one accelerate hard from slow speeds off a roundabout and make sure it doesnt judder from the rear. My dads needed a new propshaft bearing which cost a few hundred at an indy.
