O'Neill keeps them up from bottom position and leaves a hero after 6 months.

He goes to Liverpool and gets them into the top half, where is the value to his career in that? The Liverpool fans want the title and the club doesn't have the facility to be able to challenge for it. He could win the Champions League, as Benitez did, and still leave branded a failure by half the fans.
