Im thinking of doing the back springs by myself, i have a set of -40mm james springs here but im getting mixed opinions as what to do

this guide from the forum sounds really easy

remember im only doing the back ones as i have no spring compressors. Could anyone tell me if the first guide from here is fine? or is there other things i should look out for/do?

dead easy mate, dont need a guide,

jack back of car up and put on axle stands,

put jack under neath axle

undo the 17mm nut at the bottom of the shocks,

lower axle,

remove old springs,

put new ones in, jack axle back up, bolt back in done

sounds easy like, so its basicly like the first guide? going to have a go at it tommorow

without sitting and reading it properly, yes, infact im sure thats the one i read when i tackled it the first time, was dead nervous about doing it, but it was really simple, took abit too loosen the nuts as they were rusted in, but plenty of penetrating fluid like wd40 or similar, and lots of heaving and it came out, then its really easy after that


just make sure that you put the spring the right way round and in the seat properly

just had a go then and the nut was rusted to bits going to take it to a garage i think

u don't want to undo the nut, its the bolt u want to have a go at, soak the bolt on the drum side with wd40 for a bit and use a 6 sided socket on the bolt, it will undo it'll just be tight, its dead easy once the bolts undo

Phillips is bang on, easiest job in ever. Can be done in about 20 mins if you've done it before. Obviously you haven't so will take a bit longer

only took me 20 minutes on my first attempt and that was on ste-m's car with well rusted in bolts

yeah Phillips_91 is spot on. avoid a garage why pay for services you can do yourself with ease. to save even more time, just undo the bolt on both sides and jack the car up as if you were changing a wheel, from there you will just be able to pop the odl spring out, in with the new job done (Y)

Would that not cause the shock to expand as the bolt is taken out? as it will be compressed will it not?

Could cause injury if not carefull

(please correct me if im wrong)

yes it would cause the shock to expand, but not like a rocket, would expand slowly and then when you lower the car it will compress the shock ready to put the bolt back in. when i did it i didnt have a problem. and as for safety i left the wheels on so the beam couldnt drop and take my arm off, and i made sure i was wearing safety goggles and had the area quardened off for a 10m radius haha. although thinking about it, your method is alot more proffesional and alot less "ghetto"

thinking about it..... actually i think i jacked the car up first so that it was already expanded :/ was a while ago mind.

If its rusted and tight then use a socket with a breaker bar. If you dont have access to a breaker bar get something you can fit over the handle of the ratchet to give you more leverage. If your using a spanner, do the same or link two spanners together
