Just go to www.dell.co.uk and spec up something to what you are willing to spend
Just went to their website, found a clearance bit
http://www1.euro.dell.com/uk/en/home/deals4/fs.aspx?refid=deals4&s=dhs&cs=ukdhs1&c=uk&l=en&~ck=mn&redirect=1
The Inspiron 15 for £359 would probably do for Uni work and internet.

I'm referring more to their physical build quality than anything else.
I say this both from my own personal experience and the HP/Compaq laptops I've had the displeasure to repair in the past.

I found that i didn't need a laptop for my uni as there are cmputers everywhere at our campus. Make sure you really really cant do without one before you spend your money.

Have to agree here with both points. Get a Samsung or Dell.

Anything but an Acer and you will be fine.
You probably won't get a vaio under budget
HP's are fine, however I have experienced problems with them when they get to 3/4 years old
Samsung are nice
Can get more for your money with a Dell as long as you don't care it'll look like an office laptop
